THE CHARACTER
Talia has only the faintest memories of living in Moiunto, one of the Southern Isles. The constant heat, the waves crashing on the shore, chasing other kids through the town as parents went about their day. Those days are long gone though. Sure, she and her family visit her grandparents every year, but visiting is vastly different from living there.
She was 7 when the family moved. Again, she doesn't remember much, but she remembers the fear and confusion of a brand new place, so different than what she knew. Her English was broken and not very good. That, combined with her dark skin, made her a novelty among her peers. And those that are different are punished for that difference.
She almost envied her little sister. Ayana had only been 2 years old when they crossed the ocean, not even speaking in their parents' tongue yet.
* Was shy and awkward for the first few years. Was teased/mocked/bullied for her accent even after her English got better.
* Eventually her peers matured into NOT snickering every time she opened her mouth, but by that time Talia was actually pretty comfortable being by herself. She stayed polite and friendly when spoken to but didn't go out of her way to spend time with other children her age.
* When Ayana punched that boy for making fun of her skin color, Talia secretly cheered for her. She'd been wanting to do that to her own classmates for ages. Talia was sorely disappointed when their father told her that old saying about hate breeding hate. And far be it for Talia to disagree with her father, but sometimes you just have to punch bigots in the face.
* Upon graduation, Talia immediately started searching for a job. She didn't want to go to college, which caused a minor rift between her and her parents. She got good grades, she was smart, why didn't she? Because she HATED school. A student's worth depended on numbers on a paper and answers on a test.
* She hopped around odd jobs for a bit and is currently working as a waitress for the tavern.
